What A Day

Yesterday went something like this . . .

DH made a nice pot of coffee to help me start my Monday. Coffee maker backs up, putting coffee all over the counter and cabinets.

The turkey that was thawing in a cooler overnight was no where near ready to cook and today is the only free day to cook it. (We cook the turkey ahead of time to make for an easier Thanksgiving.) I start to alternate wiping down the cabinets with putting fresh water into the cooler to accelerate thawing.

Kids get breakfast and start school. #1 son can't find the Awana booklet that he needs to work on. Borrows brothers and we do have some nice discussion of the checkpoints. #2 son starts work on his history assignment on the computer. #2 son comes in crying because he's worked ahead in the history and did more than he had to. #2 son complains of being cold and I realize that he's running a 101 degree fever.

We shift to watching The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe in German. This is going to count as part of school today. The turkey is finally roasting away. I manage to get the turkey done but don't have time to carve it before we have to leave for #1 son's scout meeting. As we are about to leave, I discover that coffee had flowed into one of the kitchen drawers, soaking many of the contents. This is the drawer where I store my iPod and the paperwork for the cruise we're taking in a few weeks. Fortunately the half dozen Easter finger puppets seem to have soaked up most of the coffee. I empty the drawer, wipe down essentials and fill a bowl with hot soapy water and soaking ducks and bunnies.

We finally make it to the scout meeting. #2 and #3 sons sit in the car reading, playing video games and hitting each other with umbrellas while I try to make arrangements with dh to come cover the committee meeting. I finally get kids home and ready for bed. DH is experiencing the wonder that is the committee meeting. He gets home after a "ten minute meeting packing into ninety minutes." #2 and #3 sons are already asleep. #1 son is sent to bed with a flashlight and a magazine from the naval aviation safety center. He bumps into a couple corners because he won't stop reading and walking at the same time.

DH and I discuss the day over left over slices of his chocolate bundt cake. Then we end up watching video of the 2007 Punkin' Chunkin contest. (Don't miss the AT&T segments.)

Somewhere in the crooks and cranies of that day, we still got through most of the day's school. The turkey turned out well. The cruise info stayed dry and the iPod escaped unscathed. #2 son seems mostly back to normal this morning and we're off for another fun filled day.

Thank you for this post. It gave me a chuckle. It is nice to see some other people have days like this.

One of my favorite parts was 'experiencing the wonder of a Scout committee meeting'.

I used to be on a Cub Scout committee and now am JUST a Den Leader. I know of what you speak. ;)

And sadly, I tend to go to the meetings and think how much better they are than a year ago.
